The French Alps are full of famous mountain passes, but also lesser known gems. The famous line is the Route des Grandes Alpes, from Lake Geneva down towards the Mediterranean, with names like Iseran, Galibier, Izoard, Vars, Cayolle and Bonette along the way. A nice base is somewhere around Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Briancon or Barcelonnette, depending on which part you want to ride. The Col de l'Iseran is very high and feels almost empty at the top. Galibier is more Tour de France history and usually busier. Check the season before you go; the high passes may be closed in the spring or late in the season.
